Fin stratège, homme de guerre, autoritaire, violent, joueur, paillard, jouisseur, charmeur aussi, mais également homme fragile et désespéré, obsédé par la mort, tel est l'âtre qui se montre à nous.

Ce sont les diverses et fascinantes facettes et la complexité de ce roi passionné auquel s'intéresse Daniel Colas, dans une prose moderne se détachant du langage classique avec laquelle sont abordés en général les sujets historiques.

Il s'est entouré pour ce faire d'une distribution à la hauteur de ce projet : Jean-François Balmer dans le rôle de Henri IV, Béatrice Agenin dans celui de Marie de Médicis, Maxime d'Aboville qui joue un Prince de Condé d'une grande complexité et ambigüité avec beaucoup de brio, ainsi que Xavier Lafitte également très convainquant dans le rôle de Bassompierre. On ne peut tous les citer, mais plus de 15 comédiens se pressent sur scènes, avec une précision millimétrique.

Le bel écrin du Théâtre des Mathurins accueille tout ce petit monde dans de grands décors cossus et de magnifiques costumes d'époques.

Cette débauche de moyens est à la hauteur de l'ambition de ce spectacle, qui permet, outre de découvrir une personnalité historique hors du commun, de revenir sur une partie de l'histoire de France, en cette période troublée par le fanatisme religieux, l'intolérance et le terrorisme.

(...) It has a Bressonian attention to mood and moment, wierdly combined with Alfres Hitchcock's brazen knack for suspense.

(...) In the City of Sylvia reminds you that most cinema discourages you from looking, really looking. (...) People who would otherwise be beneath your notice as crowd-scene extras, start to become familiar: you see them from different angles, in different scenes, in different streets. You notice them, and this act of noticing - like the man's hyper-alert sensitivity to news of Sylvia - is a jab to your solipsism.

Guerin appears to have lit their (Xavier Lafitte and Pilar Lopez de Ayala) faces with something more than daylight to produce that artificial, studio feel: Strasbourg suddenly looks more like a back-projection. I was actually on th eedge of my seat for this exchange; it sounds absurd, I know, and of course the whole film is vulnerable to mockery, but I found it genuinely gripping in its pure normality.

In the City of Sylvia is pure pleasure and pure cinema.

A sensitive young romantic (Xavier Lafitte), identified in Guerin's notes as the Dreamer, searches a foreign city (Strasbourg) for his lost soulmate. "Fetish" seems too cruel a word for the nameless poet's obsession with the Sylvia he might have met some years before in club. And the underworld where this pre-Raphaelite hippie goes to retrieve her is a paradise - summery Strasbourg is almost ridiculously ripe with gorgeously individuated women. But, wait, could this heaven be another sort of hell?
